Ronda Rousey UFC 207 Defeat - 7 Things We Learned
5. No, She's Not The Biggest Star In The UFC
Dana White likes to claim Ronda Rousey is the biggest star in the UFC. Yet by almost all metrics, it doesn't appear to be true.
UFC 207's box office is reportedly $4.5 million, a number dwarfed by Conor McGregor at UFC 205 in New York, who reportedly helped earn the company almost $18 million at the gate.
Now, box office isn't everything. There's still PPV buys, but chances are, while Ronda might get more mainstream press, when all is said and done, she doesn't come close to McGregor's 1.5+ million buys, a number he has reportedly hit at least twice this year (as the UFC doesn't release official numbers, all numbers are estimates).
And in the cage? Keep in mind that after Rousey lost to Holly Holm, she vanished for a year, only to come back and shun the spotlight. McGregor, after losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, immediately went back to the drawing board, changed his game plan, and returned to earn the victory in a rematch. While refusing to avoid the spotlight.
In the fight business, it's all about how you handle loss. Rousey cannot be the biggest star at this point, especially if she goes back into seclusion.
The queen is dead. Long live the king.
