The WORST Moment From EVERY WWE SummerSlam
20. DX Buries The Spirit Squad For No Good Reason (2006)
It's challenging to pinpoint the dirt worst moment from SummerSlam 2006. Hardcore fans of Paul Heyman's original outfit would point to Big Show beating Sabu in an ECW Title bout, and there were some who didn't like a crusty battle between Ric Flair and Mick Foley later on. However, here, the nod goes to D-Generation X letting the world know what WWE thought of some young aspiring stars.
Shawn and Hunter pasted the entire Spirit Squad faction before working Vince and Shane McMahon in a tag bout. Yes, they also kicked lumps out of other heels interfering on the McMahon's behalf too (it was like a rehash of Royal Rumble '94 at times!), but most of the damage was reserved for Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky and Mikey.
It wouldn’t be long until the Spirit Squad were literally placed in a container shipped off to OVW as a symbolic demotion on TV. Apparently, ridiculing a gimmick you'd literally created for these fledgling workers was the way to go, at least in the minds of WWE's higher-ups. Luckily for them, DX vets had no problem making the Squad look like total losers.
After all, why bother focusing on the future Dolph Ziggler at all when Shane McMahon needed some more eyeballs on him. Seriously, those cheerleading boys had to be wondering why they'd suddenly fallen so foul of the creative team. The writing was on the wall for them after being treated like lowly jobbers by HBK and Triple H at SummerSlam.
The Squad was off to developmental mere months later.
