The 1994 Royal Rumble gave fans a huge shock when there was no clear-cut winner. With both sets of feet simultaneously landing on the ringside floor, it was deemed that Bret Hart and Lex Luger were the co-winners of the match. After being injured in an earlier match with his brother Owen against The Quebecers, Bret Hart would go on to have Owen turn on him, targeting his injured knee. Despite this, Hart would still compete in the Rumble match, selling the injury as only Bret Hart could. The Hitman ended up part of the match's final four, along with Shawn Michaels, Fatu, and Lex Luger, firmly on the Lex Express push to the main event by that point. Hart dispatched of Fatu, Luger of Michaels, and the two both then tumbled over the top rope together. With a Wrestlemania WWF Title shot on the line for the winner, this caused quite the problem for WWF President Jack Tunney. In a time when triple threat matches were a true rarity, it was deemed that Luger would go up against then WWF Champion Yokozuna at Wrestlemania, and Bret would take care of the sibling rivalry with brother Owen on the same card. Whoever left the Luger/Yoko match as WWF Champion would go on to fight the Excellence of Execution later that night. Wrestlemania X would see The Hitman walk out as the WWF Champ, getting some measure of revenge for the previous year's loss to Yoko.
