Sheamus was the subject of an internal power struggle between WWE and TKO; or more specifically, his impending exit from the organisation was pushed for by one side rather than the other.

This is per WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, who learned that "an unnamed high-level member of the WWE office went to TKO and "went to bat" for Sheamus. That individual dove into the value that Sheamus brings to the company that stretches beyond his in-ring contributions".

Evidently the WWE staffer who did the former Champion's bidding wasn't successful, and the two sides couldn't come to a new agreement. Sheamus (real name Stephen Farrelly) rejected a contract and extension and will leave WWE when his current deal expires.

The news of the 20-year veteran's departure shocked fans, but perhaps not as much as it might have done had it not followed the similar tale of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods' exits from the organisation after similar amounts of time under the umbrella

On the possibility of the 'Celtic Warrior's next move, the report went on to add "a person close to Sheamus believes he would welcome the idea of competing for AEW, even if it is on a short-term basis, if the right situation presented". There's been various bits of speculation around the possibility of the 48-year-old making the move to All Elite Wrestling, not least because of the links with ex-colleagues including former Tag Team Championship partner Claudio Castagnoli (FKA Cesaro).

Whatever comes next, it would mark the first in-ring appearance for Sheamus in nearly a year as of writing. His last WWE match to date was a tag team match alongside former rivals John Cena and Rey Mysterio against The Judgment Day's Dominik Mysterio, Finn Bálor and JD McDonagh on November 17th 2025 episode of Monday Night Raw.
