I didnt even know that the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns had a feud going. This is because I dont watch college football. A lot of people in America do watch, but the majority of wrestling fans around the world dont care about two colleges from two different states that play each other once a year. Sandow making fun of the Longhorns on Raw didnt do much for me, or for 99% of the overall audience. Attacking the local team is what is referred to in the business as cheap heat. Before the days of TV, it made sense for a local heel at an indy show to declare their love of the rival towns team. It was an easy way to get people riled up, as everyone knew what they were going for right away. Ive been to two indy shows this summer and heels on both shows insulted the town I was in. I respected their opinion. But on a national audience in 2014 having wrestlers insult the local sports team feels dated (pretty much as dated as someone attacking the country the audience lives in). Segments like that belong on house shows and not for a worldwide audience. Does this mean when WWE goes to Ireland theyll air a segment highlighting the (let me do a quick Google search here) The Shamrock Rovers vs. St. Patrick's Athletic rivalry? Because that is something I will not stand for!
