10 Famous Unmade Comic Book Movies We WISH We Could Have Seen
3. James Cameron's Spider-Man
Anyone who's ever read the infamous 'scriptment' online knows that there's every chance this thing could have turned out to be an unmitigated disaster, but even the mere thought of a filmmaker like James Cameron tackling Spider-Man makes it one of the most famous unmade comic book movies in history.
Given that he seems content to spend the rest of his career in Pandora and he's only given us two new movies in the last quarter of a century, it seems unlikely that we'll ever see Cameron direct anything other than Avatar sequels. That being said, you still can't help but wonder what would have happened if he'd stayed the course and made Spider-Man directly after True Lies as he'd originally intended.
The Terminator creator's 57-page outline would have definitely needed to be refined, mind you. Not only did it feature an awful lot of swearing, but there seemed to be some sort of puberty allegory every five minutes, and there was also a sex scene were Peter Parker seduced Mary Jane Watson on top of the Brooklyn Bridge after describing to her the mating rituals of various spider species. But hey, this was only the first draft.
The project eventually collapsed in the wake of the complicated rights battles surrounding the character, just like every other attempted Spider-Man movie from numerous studios, before Sam Raimi eventually took the reins and finally got it made.
With one of the most technologically-gifted and innovative filmmakers in history tackling one of the world's most iconic superheroes, with a cast that was rumored to involve Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger's Doctor Octopus and R. Lee Emery's J. Jonah Jameson, James Cameron's Spider-Man would have truly been a sight to see.
