4. Phantasm II - Brain Suck

The Phantasm series has become iconic thanks to the menacing Tall Man and the floating silver spheres; these nasty devices latch onto their victims before drilling into their brains and sucking them out.

Phantasm II was an attempt to make the series more mainstream, so the dreamy weirdness of the original was toned down in favour of a streamlined plot. The gore was also pulled back, especially with the death of the priest. In the theatrical version we see the sphere drilling and the priest screaming, but there’s not much blood.

In the workprint the scene had gushing torrents of blood emerging from the sphere, but the MPAA weren’t impressed. In order to get an R rating the scene had nearly all the blood taken out, which is why the editing is weirdly choppy during this scene.
