10 Niggling Worries Over Marvel's Next 10 Movies
4. Can Paul Rudd And Evangeline Lilly Conjure Up Some Real Chemistry? - Ant-Man And The Wasp
Ant-Man was one of the weakest entries in the MCU - a side-effect of a last-minute directorial swap, a middling villain, and poor chemistry between Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly. No, their chemistry wasn't as bad as the outright awkward dynamic between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman in the Thor movies, but it was certainly lacking. There was just no spark.
Next year, though, Ant-Man will get its very own sequel dubiously titled "Ant-Man and the Wasp," which implies that Rudd and Lilly will share an equal amount of screen-time (or near enough) and will spend much of the movie's length in each other's company. Cue relentless scenes of snarky, gender-based banter.
But it's kind of hard to be excited about this prospect, given that their partnership in the first film was average at best. This actually pinpoints a specific problem with the MCU at large: people complain about the poor villains, but what about all the poorly rendered romances? When Gwyneth Paltrow is one half of the best couple in the canon, you know something has gone very wrong.
Hopefully Rudd and Lilly are more comfortable with each another now and have a genuine shot at creating some sparks, but don't count on it.
