Another advantage of Doctor Who over Star Wars is the superior characterisation. Let's try to compare apples with apples: in the Star Wars prequels, Anakin moons over Padme. In Series 3 of NuWho, Martha engages in similar mooning over the Doctor. However, Doctor Who manages superior characterisation following a similar intial setup: Martha comes to the eventual, realistic realisation that a relationship couldn't work and this epiphany is followed by a true friendship developing between her and the Doctor. In many ways, this more convincing characterisation is fuelled by the better writing, which is in turn fuelled by a better set of underlying ideas.
