Many fans of Christopher Eccleston may not have heard of the 2009 short film, The Happiness Salesman. With its limited distribution, that might not be a surprise but it is a shame, since the film is excellent. This atmospheric 15-minute short from Kaos Films stars Eccleston as a door-to-door salesman who just might be the Devil. The unnamed salesman offers a harassed mother of a constantly crying baby the chance to buy a DVD. It's not just any DVD, however, it contains every detail of her ideal future - a future that will come true and he'll even throw in a free steak knife. To sweeten the deal further, she can take a quick look at the DVD's contents to see it's real and while there is a price, they can talk about the specifics later. This brief, spooky film is packed with many great acting moments, such as Eccleston's expression of sadness when the mother calls him back to the door after initially rebuffing him. This marvellous acting choice perfectly externalises his character's regret over what will surely happen once he is allowed in. The Happiness Salesman is definitely a film to seek out and enjoy, and Eccleston is honestly fantastic in it.
