10 Upcoming Movies Destined To Piss Off Fans
9. The Lion King
Sometimes remakes of old movies are great, especially when the original was either made so long ago that a lot of people have forgotten about it (Scarface), or was originally in a foreign language (The Departed).
The Lion King though, as one of the most popular and successful animated movies of all time, falls into neither of those categories.
The remakes haven’t printed money like Disney perhaps hoped they would, but they’ve still offered a decent return on the investment, and they’re likely hoping The Lion King could turn it all around.
With Donald Glover, Beyoncé and John Oliver in the cast, they’re certainly stacking the cards in their favour. However, even after several images and a slowly growing marketing campaign, the excitement feels tepid at best.
The problem isn’t just that we’ve seen them all before, or that with Cinderella, Dumbo and the rest we’re growing weary. It’s just that The Lion King seems like a really strange one to adapt.
Yes, it’s hugely popular, but that’s because the cartoons are expressive and humanlike: smiling, laughing and crying. A CGI realistic lion just doesn’t have the same emotive value. Fans might not be happy if this doesn’t live up to the original.
