10 Upcoming Movies With Troubled Productions
3. Avatar 2
2009's Avatar is the most commercially successful movie of all-time, so what exactly is holding up the sequel? Avatar 2 was announced shortly after it was apparent the first would be a box office goliath, with a targeted release date in 2014. Five year past the original schedule, the film is still facing setbacks, with Disney pushing its release back to 2021 earlier this month.
If you want to think in more relative terms, this isn't off-brand. James Cameron started development for Avatar in 1996, before his other box office record-breaker Titanic even hit theaters. This speaks directly to Cameron's nature, as he has often been labeled as a perfectionist.
The delay from Disney appears to be far more pragmatic. Disney's latest release schedule has made way for a new Star Wars trilogy, as both franchises will take turns dominating the month of December during alternating years starting in 2021.
This seems to be more of a case of finding the right time as opposed to a messy or clumsy production, but Avatar may not be the priority for the House of Mouse that we all once anticipated.
