It appears that Laura Dern will be playing a high-ranking rebellion leader in Star Wars Episode VIII, a political rival to Princess Leia who has a particularly strained relationship with Poe Dameron. According to the report, Leia will be gravely injured at one point, causing Dern's character to take the driver's seat until Dameron leads a mutiny on the ship. This seems to largely put to bed all those rumours about her playing Rey's mother, short of an insanely convoluted twist late in the movie.
