20 Film & TV Remakes You Didn't Know Were Coming
2. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
There have been two major adaptations of Stieg Larsson's iconic Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from 2005. Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish trilogy starring Noomi Rapace was strong, while David Fincher's 2011 outing, arguably one of his most underrated efforts, never evolved into a full Millennium Trilogy.
Fincher's effort, as is to be expected, was an outstanding piece, however even with a run time of 2 hours and 38 minutes, it couldn't delve as deep into the story, the narrative, and the themes of the source material as much as Larsson's work warranted, in particular the ending.
The film certainly still worked, however compared to Larsson's novel, a lot of aspects felt almost skimmed over and rushed. A series, allowing for far more exploration of the characters and their intertwining pasts and relationships, could well be the right move for the story.
Should Sky's efforts be able to bring to life a successful adaptation of Larsson's first Millennium book, there's no reason to think that further seasons couldn't adapt the further novels. Since Larsson's death, the trilogy has been continued with five more books by David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff, and each would be a perfect base for a season of the show.
