20 Movies Destroyed By Their Plot Holes

12. Cars - Who Built The World?

From 1995 to 2010, Pixar was untouchable. Merging breathtaking visuals with masterful, Oscar-worthy writing, they delivered a ludicrous run of outstanding animations, with just one exception. That exception was Cars.

Cars might look stunning, but compared to virtually everything else Pixar did in the 2000s, it is a notably mediocre venture, and a big reason for this (alongside its forgettable story and characters) is the poor world-building that just raises far too many unanswered questions.

In a word populated entirely by cars, who built this vast world? If there are no humans, why do the cars have door handles and stuff? Oh wait... is this secretly a post-apocalyptic world where cars overthrew humanity?!

Well, almost certainly not, but people's minds have often wandered in that direction, and with a clearer story world, it'd be a lot easier to get invested and such questions wouldn't have been asked. Additionally, the lack of humans or animals makes the entire thing feel kinda soulless, in all honesty.

In stark contrast to the beautifully constructed worlds of other Pixar films like Monsters Inc. and Coco, the Cars franchise is burdened by a poorly designed world, which just raises far too many unanswered questions. That is one of the main reasons why this generally forgettable (or outright terrible in the case of Cars 2) series has been such an albatross around Pixar's neck for the past 20 years.
