20 Recent Movie Twists That Fell Completely Flat

5. Happy Gilmore 2 - Happy Accidentally Kills Virginia

Seriously, what the hell was this?

Happy Gilmore 2, a belated sequel to one of Adam Sandler's best comedies, was over-reliant on fan-service and the laughs were inconsistent but it was a perfectly agreeable follow-up overall. If nothing else, it was 100 times better than Adam Sandler's first live-action sequel, which was Grown Ups 2 (arguably one of the worst movies ever made).

Still, it started out in the strangest way imaginable, with Happy Gilmore (Sandler) accidentally killing his beloved wife, Virginia (Julie Bowen), when she's hit in the head by one of his golf balls. What?!

The sequel obviously needed to come up with a way to make Happy retire from golf so that he'd need to work his way back up, but this was exactly the wrong way to do it. It was a sour and bizarrely mean-spirited twist that ended what had previously been a touching romance in terrible fashion, and it turned fans off pretty much immediately.

Thankfully, the rest of the movie eventually brought most of them back onboard, but it was a close one.
