20 Recent Box Office Bombs EVERYONE Saw Coming
4. Eddington
Even accepting that Ari Aster's new film Eddington had a more hemmed-in budget of $25 million compared to his previous $50 million horror flop Beau Is Afraid, it still seemed overpoweringly unlikely that a neo-Western black comedy centred around the pandemic would have much box office juice at all.
A mixed response from both critics and general audiences alike set the tone, which combined with vague marketing, a beefy 149-minute runtime, and the fact that many moviegoers crave escapism rather than reminders of the pandemic added up to an inevitable flop.
Eddington ultimately grossed just $13.7 million worldwide, a hair above the $12.3 million grossed by Beau Is Afraid, which is at least a less-catastrophic result with its substantially lower budget.
All the same, with two flops in a row under A24, it'll certainly be interesting to see if the distributor continues to bankroll his off-the-wall experimental projects, lest he return to more "conventional" horror fare like Hereditary and Midsommar.
