25 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Summer 2016 - Ranked
20. Alice Through The Looking Glass
Release Date: May 27th
Billed As: The inevitably bonkers sequel to that surprisingly lucrative Tim Burton film nobody liked.
Hype: The Alice movies are a curious thing: even after the first one was something of a critical bust, it pulled in an astronomical amount at the box office and made it virtually unthinkable that a sequel wouldn't come.
Unfortunately, judging by the first reviews, the sequel isn't exactly great. It's currently at an almighty 17% on RottenTomatoes, lambasted for its "gaudy CGI" and manic imagination, it doesn't sound like a critical darling. But if the original proved one thing, it's that critical reception to this sort of thing doesn't necessarily matter.
It's likely to have cost as much as the original (pegged in the $150-200m range), so Disney will be hoping for a similar reaction at the box office (particularly with their TV arm currently pulling down financial performance). Even without critical backing, they might get a surprising financial hit, because of proximity with other live action Disneys, and there are genuinely lots of people out there who are excited for it.
