25 Most Hotly Anticipated Movies Of Summer 2016 - Ranked
19. Free State Of Jones
Release Date: June 24th
Billed As: A racially charged real life American Civil War film with a new Oscar winner that doesn't have a bear attack.
Hype: Now that Matthew McConaughey is a really interesting actor and not a walking tanned torso, everything he does is suddenly a hell of a lot more intriguing. Even without him, the true life story of Newton Knight, who defied the Confederacy to set up his own mixed-race community in Jones County and married a former slave.
Gary Ross' expensive Civil War story feels suspiciously like a replanted Robin Hood, and there's a historical importance to it that immediately lend it weight even beyond its excellent cast. It looks like another swing for the fence for McConaughey too, who now gets to work with a different class of actor and gets more space to choose his work.
So far, his choices suggest he has a good eye, so that's another tick for Free State Of Jones.
