4. Bruce Wayne / Batman (The Dark Knight Trilogy) €“ Escalation And Abandoning His Duties

Bruce Wayne may have taken on the mantle of his worst fear to become the iconic hero Batman, but it wasn't without some very unfortunate consequences. In Christopher Nolan's dark and gritty trilogy the theatrics of putting on an the persona of a bat to put fear into his enemies hearts leads into the very real threat of escalation. As Gordon points put in the closing moments of Batman Begins, what will happen when a larger-than-life hero joins the fight? The answer of course if a larger than life villain. Enter the Joker, played magnificently by the late Heath Ledger. While The Dark Knight retains the gritty realism, it does play on the theatrics of Batman but creating a villain as extreme as his deranged nemesis. The truth of course is that if Batman had not come into the picture, neither would a villain of the magnitude of the Joker or Bane. Talking of the man that broke Batman, this leads to his second fail. By taking the fall for the death of Harvey Dent, Bruce Wayne abandons to the good fight and when Bane arrives in Gotham City, it is too late. Eight years of peace have made Gotham ripe for the taking and alone Batman cannot fight it. The truth is, had Bruce Wayne kept his vigilante mantle over those years between The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, the chance are Talia Al Ghul and Bane would never had taken the foothold they gained in crushing Gotham City.
