2. Joe Pesci - Casino

Casino might be accused in some circles of being a retread of Goodfellas, but it’s still a great piece of work from Scorsese. In the movie Joe Pesci plays another unhinged, psychotic gangster who isn’t long for this world, but the fate awaiting him in this one is particularly unpleasant.

He and his brother are brought out for a meeting in a cornfield – which should have been a warning sign really – before being assaulted with baseball bats. Pesci has to watch his brother being savagely beaten to death - which is made all more unsettling by the sound effects - before he receives a battering of his own.

It’s the level of detail that goes into it that makes the scene so hard to watch, including Pesci’s mashed up face. In the end he’s dragged – just barely alive – to a hole before he and his brother are buried alive.
