Why?
As leader of the Guardians and owner of the ship they dart around the galaxy in, Peter 'Star-Lord' Quill is every bit a main character as Tony Stark or Captain America.
We've seen him as a child, witnessed his growth from just making a quick buck into someone who wants to do right by the universe, and in Infinity War, we saw him declare his love for Gamora, before having to shoot her.
Guardians 3 is already on the cards, and though the latter point was revealed as an illusion, Star-Lord really gets put through the wringer; his final big act being to attack Thanos - which sets him free and dooms billions of lives in the process.
If all that doesn't have a sizeable impact on his psyche going forward, what was even the point?
