20 Greatest Horror Movie Deaths Of The 2020s (So Far)
3. Dewey Riley - Scream (2022)
The fifth Scream film finally did the thing that many fans thought they never would - kill off one of the original legacy trio.
And of course it ended up being fan favourite Dewey (David Arquette), who after being reintroduced as a grizzled, down-and-out gunslinger type, dies a savage hero's death.
After helping get the Carpenter sisters (Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega) and Richie (Jack Quaid) safely out of the hospital following a Ghostface attack, he heads back inside the finish the unconscious killer off.
However, a sudden phone call from Gale (Courteney Cox) distracts Dewey long enough for Ghostface to spring back to life and gut him from end to end.
As frustrating as it was that Dewey went back alone and was so easily distracted, the physical act of his murder is so boldly nasty for such a beloved character, accompanied by the chilling Ghostface one-liner, "It's an honour."
After a full quarter-century of the original trio being untouchable, Dewey's death hit hard.
