11. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

No one knew what to expect from Nia DeCosta's sequel to Danny Boyle's long-gestating 28 Days Later follow-up the previous year, but The Bone Temple skewered expectations all the same. 

Taking place after 28 Years Later found young survivor Spike (Alfie Williams) taken in by a gang of sadistic Jimmy Saville-inspired murderers, The Bone Temple shifts most of its focus to gang leader Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal (Jack O'Connell) and mourning doctor Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), juxtaposed souls uniquely changed by the new world. 

With Fiennes delivering one of the most blistering performances of his career and DeCosta's moody direction amplifying the depravity of the Jimmys' sadism to unshakable effect, the action-horror takes a look at human nature and faith in a way that's wholly unexpected but consistently compelling. 

At its core, The Bone Temple is a tragedy and a dark comedy, a zombie flick and a coming-of-age nightmare, and that it works as well as it does is kinda bonkers.
