10. Obsession

The horror hit of the year, a triumph of tone, theme, and performance, Obsession has already proven to be one of the genre's most popular modern nightmares.

Produced on a relatively minuscule budget to major box office success, Curry Baker's second feature (which he also wrote, edited, and produced) follows a Bear (Michael Johnston), a lovelorn music store worker who makes a supernatural wish for his friend Nikki (Inde Navarrete) to fall in love with him. 

Love potions being a terrible idea, everything in Obsession goes horribly wrong very quickly, the results of which are at once terrifying and frustrating, as Baker takes critical aim at toxic masculinity, patriarchal power structures, and desire.

Boosted to greatness by the unsettling and tragic work of Navarrete, portraying a woman who's had her autonomy stripped from her, Obsession is a bleak, awful horror yarn destined to be remembered as a classic, and its director a young visionary to watch.
