Let's get this out of the way straight off the bat: This Firestarter remake, directed by Keith Thomas and given a modern setting, is not good. Zac Efron is unconvincing as an embattled single father, the effects look cheap, and the script injects nothing new into the forty-year-old story.

These gripes aside, though, there is Ryan Keira Armstrong, who portrays young superhuman Charlie with much more humanity and strength than anyone gives her credit for, and that makes the film endearing enough to get aboard with. Even if, honestly, she deserved so much better than its messy finale or stilted supporting cast.
