It's still very disappointing that Guillermo Del Toro wasn't able to deliver his vision of The Hobbit, but with Peter Jackson, New Line had a dependable substitute who knew how to make epic fantasies on the back of his tenure on The Lord Of The Rings.

Unfortunately, Jackson tried a little too hard to make another Lord Of The Rings trilogy rather than simply adapting The Hobbit and the results were divisive. There's a lot to enjoy in The Hobbit: Martin Freeman is glorious as wide-eyed but slightly cantankerous Bilbo, the effects are great and there's no shaking that familiar welcome of Jackson's Middle Earth.

But there are also problems - some of the dwarves are miscast, there's way too much stretching of the source material (though it's worse in the second and third films) and it all takes way too long to say anything.
