3. Rey's Parentage Won't be Revealed Until Episode IX
So, The Force Awakens set Rey up as a total mystery. We only know her first name, and that she was left on Jakku by someone as a young girl. Oh, and that she's incredibly strong with the Force, which is a bit of a clue itself. The end of the film sets her up as being the offspring of Luke Skywalker, something that had already been theorised before the movie was released (although what hadn't?), but Colin Trevorrow - director of Episode IX - has now hinted that we may have to wait until his film to find out the truth:
"Were going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying. Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. "She deserves it. Well make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and were just telling you what happened."
Rating: 7/10 It's easy to see why Trevorrow's words are being taken as meaning that we won't get the resolution until his instalment of the franchise, and there is a chance that will be the case. It's one of the big mysteries about the new trilogy, so it's understandable that they will want to wait until the final film and make sure the characters are really fleshed out, so that it has even greater impact. The trouble with that is it means all through Episode VIII Rey is (probably) going to be with Luke Skywalker, without finding out that he's her father. That seems less likely, so for this to be the case then it means her parents are still a mystery, and perhaps characters we've never met yet. Also worth noting is that he says "we." This new trilogy is a collaborative effort, because the different directors involved need to know what direction it's heading in, so he could just be talking with Rian Johnson (director of VIII, but also writer of IX) on the conclusion to come in the next instalment.
