Star Wars: Rogue One - 10 Niggling Concerns No Fan Wants To Admit

4. The Absence Of John Williams

Rogue One will be the first film in the franchise to feature a soundtrack orchestrated by anyone other than John Williams, which isn’t necessarily cause for concern. Instead, the film is being scored by Michael Giacchino, who is set to complete Disney bingo, having already scored their own Animation (Zootopia), Pixar (Inside Out, Up, Ratatouille, The Incredibles) and Marvel (Doctor Strange).

After all, the film – a spin-off prequel – needs to differentiate itself from its episodic counterparts, and an original soundtrack might be exactly what the film needs. Besides, The Force Awakens – while completely adequate – underwhelmed in this particular department, the score seeming more as though a pastiche of the composer’s previous work than anything remotely original, despite its dramatic effectiveness.

That said, the absence of John Williams could prove disastrous, especially if the soundtrack chooses to prioritise imitation over innovation, which is a considerable possibility. Equally, it could go in the opposite direction, conforming to modern tendencies by being utterly unmemorable, lacking any sense of personality. After all, the trailer music has already underwhelmed, so who’s to say the rest of the soundtrack will be any better?
