17. Toy Story 5

It was incredibly easy to be cynical about the mere existence of Toy Story 5, considering of course that the third film closed things out so perfectly, while Toy Story 4 provided an unnecessary but ultimately satisfying epilogue.

And though Toy Story 5 is absolutely not a sequel that "needed" to be made and clearly only exists because of Disney's shareholder obligations, it is at least a follow-up that retains the joyfulness and overpowering emotion of its predecessors.

Yes, Toy Story 5 is certainly the "worst" film in the series, but it's still head and shoulders above most other animated releases this year.

Smartly shifting the story away from Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) to focus instead on Jessie (Joan Cusack), this is a fun, eye-poppingly vibrant adventure that delivers another emotional gut-punch of an ending.

No doubt we'll all be doing this same song and dance again when Toy Story 6 is released and, despite its utter lack of necessity, turns out to be another solidly sweet animated offering.
