The Biggest Mistake Each DCEU Film Has Made
3. Aquaman: The Safe Story
If there's one word to sum up Aquaman, it would be... nice.
It's a nice, uplifting story of an under-confident hero believing in himself and it's elevated further by James Wan's outstanding direction and a strong cast who give it their all, especially Jason Momoa as the titular character.
Nevertheless, it's an example of an average screenplay being elevated by an excellent cast and crew. Aquaman is, unfortunately, a very by-the-numbers superhero origin story that follows all the story beats you'd expect to see from this type of movie. It is most certainly a good film, but because it plays everything so safe it never becomes great.
Still, it does deviate from the origin story formula in one way in that the central love story, for once, actually works, so that definitely counts for something.
