3. Nick Gets Bissected - Bone Tomahawk

Oh, Bone Tomahawk - a film that was largely marketed as a gritty, pulpy Western but which takes an absolutely cursed plunge into horror later on. And nobody who's seen the film will ever shake that scene.

Late in the movie, several of the central characters are kidnapped and imprisoned by a band of troglodytes, who then proceed to take one of the group - Deputy Nick (Evan Jonigkeit) - and subject him to one of the most horrifyingly brutal deaths ever put to film.

Sheriff Hunt (Kurt Russell) and his comrades can only watch helplessly as Nick is stripped naked, scalped, mutilated, and then ripped in half while still alive.

What a terrible day to have eyes, truly.

And yet as over-the-top as it sounds, from the mesmerisingly believable gore effects to the performances and grotesque sound design, it feels completely believable within this grim context.

It also comes totally out of nowhere, which surely makes it all the more blisteringly impactful.
