10 Best Moments In Final Fantasy History

9. Tidus Says Goodbye - Final Fantasy X

The ending of Final Fantasy X is a bit like Marmite. Some people hate it. I love it (although, ironically, Marmite can go back to the seventh circle of Hell, where it belongs). It's so jam-packed full of conflicting emotions that it's hard to know where to begin.

First there is relief. Having scaled the mountain-sized, flying sea monster Sin that is the embodiment of your father, defeated the bad-penny Seymour for the umpteenth time, nailed your Dad to the most bad ass boss music of the entire series, and then sacrificed your Aeons - NAY - your friends to beetle-spirit Yu Yevon, you're quite rightly left in a state of shock. On the one hand, "Yes! I've just completed the game and destroyed Sin, saving Spira."

On the other hand, "my Aeons are dead. My Dad is dead. And now I have to disappear because, ho ho, I'm not real either."

What makes the ending even more tragic is that we learn of Tidus' true fate hours earlier in the story. Our Hollywood-conditioned minds convince us that it doesn't matter; that Tidus and his team will find a way to stay in existence after the fayth wake up.

Except that never happens. After a quick celebration and the moment of realisation, Yuna shuts her eyes to hide from the truth. Tidus, with one last hug, walks through her as he fades from existence and leaps towards his father to give us one of the most tear-inducing high fives in history.
