The main focus of sports game is - unsurprisingly - recreating the sport itself. Depth of tactics and play-styles, physics, and verisimilitude are all integral for these games to work. Likewise, generating the atmosphere of these events is also hugely important for these games to be effective.

While the likes of in-game commentary and the sounds of the crowds have improved significantly over the years from the vague lines and repetitive sound effects of the early 2000s.

The spectators themselves, however, still remain flat and lifeless cutouts devoid of any of the animation you'd expect from an exciting event. Whether it's the same handful of characters performing the same animation over and over again, hordes of figures staring vacantly from the stands , or racing game spectators who will stand unfazed while a car hurtles towards them, sporting crowds don't behave like normal human beings.

In terms of game design, rendering so many people onscreen at the once costs a lot of computing power. And this is made even more challenging with higher resolutions and with each animation or behaviour they're given.

Maybe one day we'll get to see a realistic crowd in games.
