20 Upcoming Video Games That Might Surprise You
5. The Sinking City 2
The Sinking City was by no means perfect, but Frogwares' atmospheric action-adventure game nevertheless sold well enough for the studio to announce a sequel, which is taking some daring - and undeniably polarising - departures from the original.
The Sinking City 2 will boldly ditch the first game's open-world format for a smaller, more contained semi-open world, and also shift genres into more overt survival horror territory as players navigate the flooded city of Arkham during the 1920s.
A sequel that both changes genres and downsizes its scale is certainly an anomaly, given the tendency for most follow-ups to give fans more of what they enjoyed the first time but on a bigger, more ambitious canvas.
Yet considering that one of the chief criticisms of The Sinking City was its map being too big, while press previews have lauded the sequel's survival horror bent, this very much looks like a sequel which might creep up and quietly blow the first right out of the water.
The Sinking City 2 releases on August 18.
