In Final Fantasy X we heard, for the first time, just what the characters sounded like. As expected they were pretty whiney and annoying, but were also (for the most part) pretty compelling. Essentially, the actors were attempting to achieve the unenviable job of trying to create a hook in the usual, roundabout story. And this went well 99% of the time. The other 1% is marred by the protagonist Tidus' (James Arnold Taylor) attempt at producing laughter which is a thing we used to have in Britain before it was outlawed. The result is particularly awkward and feels incredibly forced. Even when you consider the context of the scene Tidus and love interest Yuna have an awkward moment, attempting to blow off steam it still feels so unnatural you can't help but cringe. We can only hope that someone told the developers at Square Enix that this is not how people laugh. Unless they're at comedy gig hosted by an awful comedian threatening to end it all if he doesn't get a chuckle.
