One thing that eventually wore people down in GTA IV was the down time. In particular the seemingly never ending stream of invites you got from the friends you acquired through the story. You could ignore them and lose the actually rather useful special abilities they had, or carefully drive them to and from a tedious mini game, neither option which could be construed as fun.

Friendships will make a return in some form in GTA V, although quite to what extent is unknown. What a lot of stock is being put into, it seems, is the mini games. There€™s nothing wrong with these games in concept, but they€™re really only good for a couple of plays before you move back to the game you paid £40 for (I take my hat off to anyone who got the QUB3D achievement in GTA IV). A completist may try and do every handgliding mission, but you€™re only doing it to get that, admittedly satisfying, notification pop up on screen.

Assassin€™s Creed III suffered from a similar problem, providing players with so many minor tasks to complete it was easy to spend hours away from the main story more than a little bit bored.
