5. It Looks Gorgeous

The trailer that was released last week had the internet salivating over its collective keyboards - it looked fantastic and looked like it could be the first photo realistic game of the new generation. Well unfortunately, in a bubble bursting fashion, it's clear that the reveal trailer was a pre-rendered, independently animated piece of work not done in the game engine, which is slightly disappointing. In better news though, while the game engine doesn't quite reach the level of detail in the reveal trailer, it still looks absolutely bloody gorgeous. The detail on all of the character models is sky high, with individual stitching, moulding and even scars visible and defined under scrutiny. The two fight arenas we see are full of character and environmental features - for instance, in the forest where Sub Zero and Scorpion are fighting, snow is knocked from the trees as they battle while ice and dirt are kicked up whenever one of the fighters hits the ground. Looking beyond that, the amount of detail put into making the fatality moves look as stomach-churningly realistic as possible (more on them later) is phenomenal, with shards of bone, internal organs and clouds of blood all promising to have you losing your lunch in high definition at every murderous victory. Whatever engine NetherRealm have put into MKX needs to be highly praised because even at this early stage, it's looking amazing.
