How many times have filmmakers attempted to cash in on a successful video game series and how may times have the results been akin to a steaming pile of non-specific manure? Super Mario Bros. anyone? Following the obscene success of the first RE game, Capcom allowed the rights for a movie to be made based on the game. Eventually in 2002 we were given Resident Evil on the big screen. When films are made of games, you expect a degree of artistic licence in an effort to move an interactive experience into an entirely passive one. So what made it from the game to the film? Well, there is: A mansion in the woods The Umbrella Corporation Zombies The T-Virus A Licker And that's about it. No, really, that's it. No Chris or Jill, no Wesker, no S.T.A.R.S. and barely even a mention of Raccoon City. Capcom retained no creative control over the movie options so the term "loosely based upon" applies in spades across all five movies. While not specifically Capcom's fault, their lack of control over their own IP in a different medium has made the films little more than cynical cash-ins that hold very little resemblance to the series they share a name with.
