20 Horror Movie Endings Way Worse Than You Think
4. Lights Out
Lights Out ends with protagonist Rebecca's (Teresa Palmer) mother Sophie (Maria Bello) realising that the malevolent entity known as Diana (Alicia Vela-Bailey) is tethered to her, and so in order to save her family she shoots herself dead, causing Diana to vanish.
Now, filmmaker David F. Sandberg received his fair share of criticism for the thematic implications of this ending, many interpreting it as saying that mentally ill people are a burden on their family and better off just ending their lives.
Sandberg, who has been open about his own mental health struggles in the past, acknowledged the criticism, but in the very least the lack of any Lights Out sequel suggested that Sophie's sacrificial act did indeed stick.
That is, until recently, when almost an entire decade after the original's release, Lights Out 2 was finally confirmed to be in development.
Given the likelihood that Diana will return for the sequel, then, it seems like Sophie's demise sadly only ended up keeping her at bay for a little while.
