Slipknot: 10 Hidden Song Details You Totally Missed
4. Before I Forget - Super Early Riff Revived
As previously mentioned, (sic) was an example of the band listening over early, cheaply produced tracks to see if anything could be repurposed with new band members and a more professional recording set-up.
Going back past their first two first studio albums to rescue a tasty riff however, is a more clear indication of the introspective nature of the band and their relentless pursuit of musical perfection. This is exactly what happened with Before I Forget, as the grinding central riff is clearly adapted from a song called Carve which appeared on a 1997 self-titled demo.
For Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), the band would enlist the services of legendary producer Rick Rubin. However, Rubin would clash heads with the band, and Corey Taylor in particular, with the singer noting he would never work with the producer again, disclosing that Rubin had encouraged him to bin Before I Forget, feeling the chorus was unworkable.
Taylor was right to stand his ground with the song becoming a fan favourite and securing their first (and to date only) Grammy award.
