Quite possibly one of the most comical and memorable transfers in history and one that Graham Souness will never be allowed to forget. Back in 1996 you could be excused for never having heard of Ali Dia because quite simply, no-one had. Dia had been on the books at Northern Premier League team Blyth Spartans and had made one substitute appearance. Graham Souness, Southampton manager at the time, received a call from what he believed was former FIFA world player of the year George Weah informing him that Dia was this fantastic prospect who had made numerous appearances for Senegal. Souness, rather than checking this up signed Dia on a one month contract and went as far as brining him on against Leeds United as a sub for Matt Le Tissier. Dia was subbed off after only 53 minutes and was then released from his contract two weeks later. It turned out the phone call had come from one of Dias University friends, not George Weah. This may well go down as one of the greatest practical jokes in the history of the Premiership.
