How many footballers are forced to work with managers who they have been sued by in the past? For Wayne Rooney and David Moyes, it was as awkward a reunion as they come, and even led to the former questioning his future at the club upon his former Everton boss arrival. The two certainly had history, dating back to their time at Goodison Park, when an 18 year old Rooney forced a £27 million move to Manchester United, in a bid to be free of a manager he described in his autobiography as overbearing and controlling. It was a book that would ultimately get the Manchester United striker into a lot of trouble, with the outraged Scot suing a 22 year old Rooney for libel in 2007, claiming the book had injured his professional and personal reputation and created serious distress. In it, Rooney claimed that Moyes had leaked details of private conversations to the press, essentially forcing him out of the club, which were found to be untrue. The then-Everton manager received an apology and an out-of-court settlement of up to £150,000. Moyes claimed in February 2010 that an older and wiser Rooney had phoned me up a year ago to apologise for his book and to say that the things hed put in his book were wrong, and hed made a mistake. Still, it didnt stop the media purporting that the two would have to be kept from throwing punches at each other at Old Trafford when Moyes was appointed Manchester United boss in May 2013. However, following an awkward summer of speculation, during which Mourinho shamelessly flirted with Rooney, he stayed at the club and delivered a fine season for the man whom he swore hed never play for again.
