11 Legendary Hardmen Who Make Modern Footballers Look Like Wimps

8. Terry Butcher

The image of the bandaged Terry Butcher soaked in blood will long remain one of English football's most iconic images, and it typified exactly the kind of a character Butcher was on the field. Before that iconic match came around, Butcher was gaining a reputation as a football hardman at club level: playing for Rangers in 1988, he kicked the referee's door off its hinges at Pittodrie, and his courage was classed as one of his chief virtues to every team he played. That courage was personified in that infamous England game against Sweden in 1989, when the side were attempting to qualify for Italia 90. The fact that he was a central defender meant heading the ball was impossible to avoid, thus reopening the cuts on his head that he had suffered earlier in the contest. As a result, the legendary blood-stained England shirt was unavoidable.
