Gentile by name, anything but by nature, Italian defernder Gentile was notorious for looking to get especially close to opponents during matches, and he wasn't afraid to bring them down if needed. His most famous quote came when man-marking Diego Maradona in the 1982 World Cup: "Football is not for ballerinas!" Quite, although fans of the modern game no doubt makes uncomfortable viewing for Gentile on that basis. He was rough, uncompromising and simply a nightmare to play against if you were an opposition forward, and perhaps that's what made the Italians so successful at the time. A player like Gentile seems a million miles away from the modern day Italian side, but at the time, he was a formidable foe for opposition players, and his demeanour was enough to derail the confidence of even the most talented of players.
