20 Ridiculous Goal Decisions Referees Got Completely Wrong

By Joseph Dempsey /

11. Darrent Bent vs Liverpool, 2009

This list has seen a series of oddities in the goals department already but they don't really get any odder than this one. In a Premier League clash between Sunderland and Liverpool at the Stadium of Light in 2009, the Black Cats memorably won the game thanks to one of the strangest goals you are ever likely to see. A Liverpool fan, who had brought a rather large, red inflatable ball with him to the game, threw the object onto the pitch just as Darren Bent was gearing up to shoot. Bent fired an effort from the edge of the Liverpool box, only for the ball to hilariously bounce off the inflatable and leave Pepe Reina wrong-footed for 1-0. Of course, had it not been for the intervention of the bouncy ball, Reina would probably have made the save and the scores remain level. The referee should also have cleared the unwelcome foreign object from the pitch and ruled that the goal should not stand, yet neither happened and the Reds fell fowl of one of the barmiest goals you are ever likely to see in the Premier League between now and judgement day.
