20 Ridiculous Goal Decisions Referees Got Completely Wrong

By Joseph Dempsey /

10. Cheick Tiote vs Man City, 2014

Last weekend, Cheick Tiote was left up in arms after he saw a perfectly good goal hit the back of Joe Hart's net when Newcastle United played Manchester City. Edin Dzeko had earlier given City the lead to put the away side in control but Newcastle rallied and, after Tiote let rip a rasping strike that left Hart beaten all ends up, thought they had grabbed an equaliser. It wasn't to be because referee Mike Jones ruled out the 'goal' and adjudged Yoan Gouffran was one of three Newcastle players standing offside when the ball flashed in. Yet Tiote had every right to feel aggrieved because, though three Magpies men were technically offside when the ball was struck, neither interfered with play nor obstructed Hart's vision. The goal should have been given by the letter of the law, yet City went on to win 2-0 thanks to a 90th minute goal from Alvaro Negredo. Had Tiote's goal stood, the result of this game may very well have been different, with Newcastle more than in the contest throughout. This result was all the more difficult to swallow at full-time as the incorrect decision saw the north east club tumble down into eighth place after a decent start to the season under Alan Pardew.
