20 Ridiculous Goal Decisions Referees Got Completely Wrong

13. Hugo Lloris vs Man Utd, 2014

On New Year's Day this year, Tottenham recorded their second consecutive win at Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory marred in controversy. Spurs had won at the Theatre of Dreams the season prior, 3-2, their first away triumph over the Red Devils in 23 years. And they were at it again on January 1, 2014, with a little help from a dubious call from the referee. Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen had given the Londoners a shock two goal cushion before Danny Welbeck clawed one back with just over 20 minutes to go. United sensed an equaliser and pressed for a crucial second and screamed blue murder when referee Howard Webb denied them a stonewall penalty in the dying embers of the game. Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris took out Ashley Young, sending the winger sprawling to the turf in a heap, but Webb wasn't interested and waved away the furious protests. Young is still in the treatment room with a shoulder injury sustained from this collision and hasn't played since, which is perhaps indicative that a spot-kick should have been given. Yet Spurs held onto the win, which may yet have serious ramifications for United's top four hopes come the end of the season.
