Earlier this month, Arsene Wenger said that if he was to sign anyone this month, it would be a centre-back. Thomas Vermaelen has suffered a set-back in his rehabilitation from a troublesome combination of Achilles and knee injuries that has limited him to just seven appearances this season, while the Frenchman has only played a minute of Premier League football since the turn of the year. And thats just one of the reasons why Wenger is looking to sign Inter Milans Andrea Rannochia this month. The 25-year-old has only 18 months remaining on his current contract at the San Siro and could be available for a knock-down price in January. The Italy international is also struggling to hold down a regular starting berth under Walter Mazzarri and as such could be open to a move to the Emirates. Given Arsenals weaknesses at centre-back, both historically and currenty, Rannochia would be viewed as ideal cover for the injury-struck Vermaelen and at 25-years-old a long-term solution to what has in the past been a problem area for Wenger.
