Chelsea Transfers: 7 Worst Ever Mourinho Signings

By Joseph Dempsey /

3. Arjen Robben

Prior to his move to Chelsea in 2004, Arjen Robben had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United. The then 20-year old had held extensive talks with the club and was even given a tour of Old Trafford. However, United's offer came in much too low for former club PSV and Robben's liking and he was ultimately snapped up by the Blues for £12.1 million. One of Mourinho's first signings, he did not make his competitive debut until November 2004 due to injury, and a number of spells on the sidelines followed thereafter. He only managed 19 strikes over the course of his three seasons at Stamford Bridge and left for Real Madrid in 2007. Once a player nominated for the "Young Player of the Year Award", he never did live up to his potential under Mourinho and most of his success has come with Bayern Munich.
